NEWPORT BEACH, CA, December 2022 - In Newport Beach, California, the owners of a 1940s bright-and-light coastal home engaged landscape designer Bridget Skinner to update the exterior of their historic home. The homeowners hoped for a modern refresh for their outdoor living space that managed to accentuate the original style of the home, while bringing the space up to date. Skinner incorporated the Stelaris lighting in her ambitious redesign that aimed to add a sophisticated edge to the classic home, for a “traditional-with-a-twist” look.

Lighting an Exterior Refresh

Skinner illuminated the front- and backyard of the pie-shaped lot with QCP’s exclusive line of lighting solutions, including Stelaris pathway lights in crisp white concrete with a honed finish. Alongside eye-catching plants and softscapes, the lighting helped create an inviting outdoor space made for gathering.

She celebrated the artistic design of the lights as a key benefit. “Typically, the element being lit is the focus. With the Stelaris line, the fixtures make a statement on their own.” She loved how the thin profile and sculptural shape of the lights complemented the natural elements of her design.

While typical outdoor light fixtures need to be camouflaged, Stelaris lights can be incorporated as a sophisticated design element. Skinner used Stelaris up-lights, adjustable up to thirty feet, to spotlight trees and architecture at the home, but she noted the quality of the light would be perfect for highlighting outdoor sculpture or public art in commercial projects, too.

Versatile and Durable

For this family home, the durability of concrete fixtures meant the homeowners would avoid extra maintenance. “These lights won’t be hurt by kids hitting them with a soccer ball, or dogs in the yard, or even someone being careless with a weedwacker,” Skinner shared. Plus, with long-lasting and energy-efficient LED light engines, the homeowners won’t have to replace a bulb for decades.

Skinner felt confident using Stelaris lights in the California coastal climate. The non-corrosive materials will stand up to the marine environment without wear or discoloration, preserving her design.

This backyard project was perfectly finished using other high-end concrete elements custom designed by QCP including countertops, outdoor furniture, candlesticks, planters, a hearth cap and pool tile.
